Lil Nas X has turned his Old Town Road lyric, “Cowboy hat from Gucci, Wrangler on my booty” into a lucrative partnership. But some country fans are upset about it.

‘Old Town Road’ has taken the music world by storm after it was first plucked by Justin Bieber.  The song got Lil Nas X signed to Columbia Records, despite not having a single album release to his name.  It has also sparked several lucrative partnerships, one of which is with the Wrangler jeans company.

Wrangler has just unveiled the Lil Nas X Collection, which features several pairs of jeans with the iconic Wrangler logo plastered across the booty. Prices range from $79 for a pair of women’s cut-off shorts or $129 for a pair of 0936 Slim Fit Jeans with the logo.

Also part of the collection is a denim button down shirt with the words “Old Town Road” written across it.

Some country fans have been frothing at the mouth about how un-country the song is. Billboard even removed the song from its Top 100 Country list after some concerns were raised. Now some rabid country fans are calling for a boycott of Wrangler.

Their argument? “True cowboys” would never wear the new collection, or even like the song the collection is based upon.

Cue a massive eye-roll here. One fan is angry that Wrangler has somehow turned against him for partnering with a profitable artist.

“I went all Wrangler when Levi went anti-gun because wrangler was the true Cowboy brand… but of course, they can’t stay true to their consumers and try to appease a totally different audience that had to google what wrangler was…”

Many fans have mentioned switching from Levi’s after their stance on gun control. Now those same fans are criticizing Wrangler after this partnership was revealed. To their credit, Wrangler has been mum on the controversy directly, only offering a general statement about inclusivity.

“Since 1947, we’ve offered jeans for a variety of wearers and occasions. Our western heritage and offering quality product for all wearers will always be the very heart of the brand.”
